Igbinedion University Okada
Editorial Summary
Igbinedion University Okada is a Nigerian private university founded by Chief Dr. Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion and established in 1999 as Nigeria's first private university to receive an operating licence from the Federal Government. The university's planning committee was inaugurated in March 1995, and the certificate establishing the institution was presented to Igbinedion on May 10, 1999, a date the university subsequently adopted as its Founder's Day. Its creation marked an important stage in the reopening of Nigeria's university sector to private institutions and established one of the country's earliest privately founded universities.
Over more than two decades, Igbinedion University has developed from its original private-university model into a multidisciplinary institution covering medicine, law, engineering, sciences, business and management, arts and social sciences, postgraduate education and related professional programmes. The university has also developed an institutional research and innovation agenda, including recent activity around research commercialisation, international partnerships and technology training.
