University of Lagos
Editorial Summary
The University of Lagos was established in 1962, two years after Nigeria gained independence, as part of the new country's effort to develop the professional and intellectual capacity required to manage its political, economic and social development. The university's founding mandate was explicitly connected to producing a professional workforce for the newly independent nation. It began operating at Akoka and subsequently developed additional campuses at Yaba and Idi-Araba, with the latter becoming home to the College of Medicine.
UNILAG has since developed into a comprehensive research university spanning medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, engineering, law, environmental sciences, management, social sciences, education, science and the humanities, alongside its Distance Learning Institute, Institute of Continuing Education and specialised research centres. Its institutional history also includes the appointment of Professor Grace Alele-Williams as Nigeria's first female Vice-Chancellor in 1985.
