University of Technology and Applied Sciences
Editorial Summary
The University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS), Navrongo, is a public university in Ghana’s Upper East Region with a mandate to advance education, research and knowledge creation in technology and applied sciences. Established under the C. K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences Act, 2019 (Act 1000), the institution began operations in 2020. In December 2025, its enabling legislation was amended and the university adopted its current name, removing the personal name previously used in its title.
Before gaining independent university status, the institution formed part of the University for Development Studies. Its academic foundations in Navrongo included the Faculty of Integrated Development Studies, the Faculty of Applied Sciences, the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences, and the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences. This institutional history helped shape its interdisciplinary orientation across scientific, mathematical, environmental and development-related fields.
UTAS’s academic structure includes schools covering graduate studies, mathematical and physical sciences, science and technology education, medical sciences, environment and life sciences, chemical and biochemical sciences, nursing and midwifery, agriculture, public health, and computing and information sciences. This breadth connects foundational scientific education with applied professional training and research relevant to Ghana’s socioeconomic development.
