OPay was established in 2018 and launched its mobile payment service in Nigeria that same year, initially building an agent-led payments network around a population with limited access to traditional financial services. Incubated by Opera, the company rapidly expanded its Nigerian payment infrastructure and became a significant part of the country’s transition toward digitally enabled everyday financial transactions. Its subsequent development into a broader financial-services platform and expansion beyond Nigeria have made OPay a notable part of the evolution of African fintech and digital financial infrastructure.
