Naspers

Lawyer, businessman, Afrikaner cultural leader

William Angus Hofmeyr was a South African lawyer and businessman who played the central founding role in establishing Nasionale Pers in 1915, the company that later became Naspers. He helped organize the financial backing and formation of the Cape-based publishing company, which began with the publication of Die Burger and subsequently expanded into magazines and book publishing. Nasionale Pers eventually developed far beyond its original publishing business, transforming through broadcasting, media and technology investments into the global consumer internet and investment group known today as Naspers. Hofmeyr's role in establishing the company places him at the foundation of one of South Africa's most internationally significant corporate groups.
