Editorial Summary

Accra Technical University is one of Ghana's long-established institutions for technical and professional higher education. Founded in 1949 as Accra Technical School, it was commissioned as Accra Technical Institute in 1957 and renamed Accra Polytechnic in 1963. The institution became a tertiary polytechnic in the 1990s and began offering Bachelor of Technology programmes in 2007. Its conversion to Accra Technical University in September 2016 marked a major institutional transition towards expanded degree-level education, applied research, and advanced technical training.
Located in central Accra, the university organises its academic activities across five faculties: Engineering, Built Environment, Applied Sciences, Applied Arts, and Business. Its programmes cover engineering and electrical systems, computing, laboratory and applied sciences, design and creative disciplines, construction and the built environment, accounting, management, and other business-related fields. This breadth links technical education with professional practice and the practical skills required across Ghana's industrial, commercial, and public sectors.
ATU's institutional approach emphasises competency-based education, hands-on training, technology transfer, and collaboration with industry. Its research and innovation activities address areas such as sustainable energy, renewable-energy systems, engineering design, digital technologies, and applied industrial problem-solving.
