Bowen University
Editorial Summary
Bowen University is a private Christian university in Iwo, Osun State, established by the Nigerian Baptist Convention in 2001. Its institutional history, however, reaches much further back than the university itself. The Baptist educational tradition that eventually produced Bowen began with the work of the Bowen family in what is now Oyo State in 1854 and developed through the expansion of Baptist primary and secondary education across Nigeria. The idea of establishing a Baptist university was formally conceived in 1938, with subsequent Baptist Convention efforts over several decades eventually leading to the establishment of Bowen University. Federal Government approval was granted in July 2001, and the university admitted its first 506 students on 4 November 2002.
Bowen subsequently developed from its initial three faculties into a multidisciplinary university with colleges covering areas including health sciences, law, computing, agriculture, engineering, environmental sciences, liberal studies and social and management sciences.
