Central University, Ghana
Editorial Summary
Central University is a Ghanaian private Christian university whose development reflects the expansion of faith-based ministerial education into multidisciplinary higher education. Established by the International Central Gospel Church in October 1988 as a pastoral training institute, it subsequently became Central Bible College in 1991 and Central Christian College in 1993. It expanded into degree-level tertiary education and adopted the name Central University College in 1998. The institution received a Presidential Charter in January 2016, becoming an autonomous university with authority to award its own degrees.
The university's principal campus is at Miotso, near Dawhenya, along the Accra–Aflao corridor, with additional campus presence in Accra and Kumasi. Its academic structure includes the Central Business School, Central Law School, School of Pharmacy, School of Medical Sciences, School of Nursing and Midwifery, School of Engineering and Technology, School of Architecture and Design, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and School of Graduate Studies and Research. These academic areas combine professional and technical preparation with the institution's emphasis on Christian values, ethical leadership, and service.
Central University's development has included expansion beyond its original ministerial training focus into business administration, law, health sciences, engineering, architecture, humanities, and social sciences. Its academic and public engagement includes research, professional education, community initiatives, and partnerships with industry and other institutions. The university has also established a record of institutional leadership through initiatives such as its Distinguished Speaker Series, which has brought academics, policymakers, and public figures into discussion of national and regional issues. Its distinctive institutional identity lies in combining Christian educational foundations with multidisciplinary professional training and a stated commitment to developing ethical, capable, and socially responsible graduates.
