Editorial Summary

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) is a federal specialised university in Abeokuta, Ogun State, established by the Federal Government of Nigeria on January 1, 1988 as part of the restructuring of the country's higher-education system and the creation of dedicated institutions for agricultural education, research and extension. It was established alongside the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi following the demerger of universities of technology that had previously been consolidated in 1984. The institution was created with a tripartite mandate of teaching, research and extension services, placing agricultural knowledge and its practical application at the centre of its national purpose.
FUNAAB's institutional development has been closely connected to Nigeria's agricultural and food-production needs. From its original five colleges established in 1988, the university expanded into areas including animal science, crop production, environmental resources management, natural sciences, engineering, veterinary medicine, food science, biological sciences, physical sciences and management sciences. This expansion transformed FUNAAB from a narrowly specialised agricultural institution into a multidisciplinary university while retaining agriculture and food systems as core elements of its identity.
