Editorial Summary
Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is Ghana's leading specialised science and technology university and one of Africa's major institutions for science, engineering, health sciences, research and technological development. Its institutional history began with the establishment of the Kumasi College of Technology in 1951, before the institution attained university status in 1961 and was named after Ghana's first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Located in Kumasi, KNUST has developed from its original technology-focused mandate into a comprehensive research university with colleges and academic programmes spanning engineering, computing, science, agriculture, health sciences, architecture, business, social sciences, humanities and other professional fields. Its research and innovation activities address areas including pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences, engineering, natural resources, climate and sustainability, technology and entrepreneurship. With a student population approaching 90,000 and extensive international academic and research engagement, KNUST occupies a significant position in Ghana's higher-education system and Africa's science and technology ecosystem. In 2026, Professor Christian Agyare became the university's 13th Vice-Chancellor, with a strategic agenda centred on transformative education, entrepreneurship-driven research and innovation, digital transformation, sustainable infrastructure, strategic partnerships and greater global visibility.
