Editorial Summary

Regional Maritime University is an international tertiary institution established to strengthen maritime education, technical training and professional capacity across West and Central Africa. Its origins date to the Ghana Nautical College, founded in 1958 to train seafaring personnel for Ghana’s shipping industry, including the former Black Star Line. In 1983, the institution was regionalised and renamed the Regional Maritime Academy, creating a cooperative framework through which participating African states could pool resources and develop maritime expertise for their respective economies. It attained full university status on 25 October 2007.
The university’s regional mandate distinguishes it from conventional nationally focused universities. Its work connects maritime education with shipping, port operations, navigation, marine engineering, logistics, maritime administration and the technical capabilities required to support international trade. Its academic structure includes the Faculty of Maritime Studies, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and Faculty of International Business and Humanities, alongside professional, vocational and short-course programmes.
Practical training is central to the institution’s educational model. Students combine classroom instruction with workshops, simulation-based learning, field visits, projects and professional training designed to connect academic knowledge with operational requirements in the maritime sector.
