Rivers State University (RSU)
Editorial Summary
Rivers State University (RSU) is a public state university in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, established in October 1980 from the former Rivers State College of Science and Technology, which itself was established in 1972. The university was originally established as Rivers State University of Science and Technology and has evolved into a comprehensive institution while retaining a strong identity in science, technology, engineering and applied disciplines. The university describes itself as Nigeria's first technological university and the first state-owned university in the Niger Delta region.
The institution was established with a practical development mandate: producing scientific and technical manpower, training science and technical teachers, supporting industrial and developmental programmes through consultancy and special projects, promoting scholarship and research, and relating its activities to Nigeria's social, cultural and economic needs. That founding orientation continues to shape RSU's academic identity.
