Editorial Summary

The University of Cape Coast is a major public research university in Ghana whose origins date to 1962, when it was established to address the country's urgent need for highly qualified graduate teachers for second-cycle institutions and the wider education system. It became an autonomous university in 1971 and has since transformed from its original teacher-education mandate into a comprehensive institution offering liberal, professional and research-intensive programmes across education, humanities, social sciences, business, law, agriculture, natural sciences, health sciences and other disciplines. Its expansion has established UCC as a significant national centre for teacher education, research, professional training and distance learning, with a substantial student population and a broad academic and research infrastructure. The university's current strategic direction emphasises innovation, global impact and national development, while its research activity increasingly addresses issues including coastal resilience, food security, environmental sustainability, health, education and social development. In 2026, Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto became the university's substantive Vice-Chancellor, bringing a background in coastal ecology, interdisciplinary ocean studies, scientific project management and research leadership to the institution's executive administration.
