University of Ibadan
Editorial Summary
University of Ibadan is Nigeria’s first university, established in 1948 as University College Ibadan in a special relationship with the University of London. Its creation followed the British colonial-era commissions on higher education and represented the first sustained institutional move toward university-level education in Nigeria. The university began academic work in January 1948 with 104 students and three foundation faculties, Arts, Science and Medicine, before developing a permanent campus on land leased by the chiefs and people of Ibadan. It became a fully independent Nigerian university in 1962, two years after independence.
The institution subsequently became a major centre for teaching, postgraduate education and research across Nigeria and the wider African academic community. Its academic structure has expanded from the three founding faculties into a comprehensive university covering fields including medicine, agriculture, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, technology, law, public health, dentistry, economics and environmental studies, alongside specialised institutes and research centres.
