University of Port Harcourt
Editorial Summary
The University of Port Harcourt was established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 1975 as University College, Port Harcourt, during a major expansion of the country's university system. Its creation formed part of the Federal Government's effort to increase access to higher education and address the country's growing manpower requirements, while also establishing a major university presence in the Niger Delta. The institution began academic operations as a university college before attaining full university status in 1977. Its location in Choba, within the Niger Delta, subsequently gave the university an important institutional relationship with a region central to Nigeria's petroleum industry and environmental challenges.
UNIPORT has since developed from a relatively small university into a comprehensive public research institution with two colleges, 17 faculties, 16 institutes, four schools and 36 centres.
