Editorial Summary

he University of Uyo (UNIUYO) is a federal university in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, whose institutional history extends beyond its federal establishment in 1991. Its immediate predecessor, the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), was established by the former Cross River State Government in 1983, following the earlier development of the site as a teacher-training institution. When Akwa Ibom State was created in 1987, the institution became jointly associated with the two states before the Federal Government converted it into a federal university in 1991. Academic activities under the University of Uyo commenced in the 1991/92 academic session.
The institution subsequently developed from its earlier science and education foundations into a multidisciplinary federal university with programmes spanning agriculture, engineering, medicine and health sciences, pharmacy, law, education, computing, natural and physical sciences, social sciences, management, environmental studies and the humanities. Its multi-campus structure includes the Main Campus, Town Campus, Annex Campus, College of Health Sciences Campus and Ime Umanah Campus.
The university entered a new leadership phase in June 2026 with the appointment of Professor Christopher Nyong Ekong as its ninth Vice-Chancellor.
