Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) is a federal public university established in September 1975 as the University of Sokoto, making it one of Nigeria's earliest universities established after the country's first generation of university institutions. It began academic activities on 20 October 1977 with 93 undergraduate students and 33 academic staff and was subsequently renamed Usmanu Danfodiyo University in 1985.
The university has grown from four pioneering faculties into a large multidisciplinary institution with faculties and academic units spanning agriculture, arts and Islamic studies, education, engineering and environmental design, law, management sciences, chemical and life sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, physical and computing sciences, social sciences, veterinary medicine and a comprehensive College of Health Sciences. Its postgraduate system and research infrastructure have also expanded substantially, with the university operating a Postgraduate School and multiple research centres.
